Frequently asked
questions.
The concrete questions you ask yourself before an interview.
Precise answers, sources when useful, honesty when we don't know.
Health and safety
Is it dangerous to go 35 hours without sleep?
For a healthy adult, in a supervised setting, properly hydrated and fed: no. Acute deprivation of 35-40 hours, on a one-off basis, presents no documented structural risk. You have probably already done it involuntarily, in less supervised conditions (new parent, deadline, long night out). Recovery sleep restores cognitive function within 24 to 48 hours. Crucial distinction: chronic deprivation (sustained, < 6h/night for months) is dangerous. Voluntary, supervised acute deprivation is not. See the science page for sources.
What are the absolute contraindications?
Bipolar disorder or history of it. Epilepsy. Severe cardiovascular disease. Uncontrolled hypertension. Pregnancy. Schizophrenia or psychotic disorders. Unstable diabetes. Medication requiring regular sleep. Under 25, over 65 (unless medical clearance after the interview). A detailed medical questionnaire is sent after the first interview. When in doubt, a physician's opinion is required.
What if I really fall ill during the experience?
The skipper and Mathieu are trained in first aid. The boat carries all regulatory equipment. Maximum distance to a port stays under 1 hour. In a medical emergency: immediate return and care. No incidents to date, but the protocol exists.
Can I die at sea?
Legitimate question, asked bluntly, so a blunt answer: no, except in extreme circumstances (sudden red-alert weather with no return to port possible — in which case the session would have been cancelled upstream). The maritime risk on a 35-hour coastal sail in high-season Mediterranean, with a state-certified skipper and an ISAF-compliant boat, is statistically lower than a day spent driving in France. Not negligible, but not specific to this experience.
What is the long-term impact on my health?
None documented in healthy subjects after a single acute deprivation. The recovery sleep that follows restores cognitive function and sleep pressure. Clinical wake therapy studies (medical use of deprivation) confirm the absence of lasting negative effects on moderate-risk subjects. See the science page.
The boat and the sailing
Where exactly does the experience take place?
The Var coast, between Toulon and Saint-Tropez. The route is built around the Hyères islands — Porquerolles, Port-Cros, Le Levant. It is a national park, a protected area, lightly trafficked at night. Boarding from a port in the Var (specified after admission, depending on the session and the chartered boat).
I have no sailing experience. Is that a problem?
No. No nautical skill required. The skipper sails. Mathieu guides you. You can take part in the manoeuvres if you want — it is even recommended at certain moments — but never a condition. If you can walk on a deck without falling, you have what you need.
I get seasick.
The boat stays in coastal waters and only sets sail in flat to lightly choppy seas (weather check within the 48 hours before boarding). Seasickness is rare under these conditions. If you are very sensitive to it, mention it during the interview — a light preventive treatment can be arranged and does not affect the practice.
How big is the boat?
12-14 metres for the collective format, selected according to the session. The boat is fully reserved for the intimate format (1 or 2 persons). For the bespoke format, the boat is defined according to the request.
What happens in bad weather?
Orange alert or higher, wind beyond the boat's safety threshold: the session is postponed to the next available one, at no cost. If postponement does not work for you, full refund. Safety overrides any calendar.
Format and group
Can I come with my partner or a friend?
Yes. The intimate format is designed for this (1 or 2 people, full charter). For the collective format, you can apply together — provided each person passes the interview individually. No couple package, no duo pricing in collective. The filter is individual, the experience is collective.
Who are the other participants?
Profiles selected through individual interview. The cohort is coherent: entrepreneurs, executives, creators, athletes, profiles in real inquiry. No spiritual tourists, no thrill-seekers. The human filter guarantees the level of the group, because one misaligned person can compromise the experience for the other 4.
Is silence enforced?
No. There are proposed silent phases (notably 2 hours at H+26), but no enforced silence across the 35 hours. Mathieu speaks when he needs to. So can you, when you need to. Speech is simply rarer and more precise than on land.
Practice and preparation
Do I need to train beforehand?
You receive a preparation protocol 7 days after admission: nutrition, hydration, sleep, mental, equipment. No specific physical training required — you do not need to run a marathon first. If you follow the protocol, your body will be ready.
Can I sleep extra before?
Recommendation: a normal night the evening before boarding. Definitely no « sleep reserve » by sleeping 12 hours the night before — it desynchronises and makes the passage harder, not easier. The preparation protocol details the rhythm to hold over the 7 preceding days.
What about the phone?
The phone is locked in a safe on board the moment we cast off. You retrieve it on docking. The skipper keeps a separate emergency communication channel for the boat. You can leave a message to a loved one before boarding saying « I am unreachable until the morning after tomorrow » — that is enough.
Can I take photos?
Not yourself. Mathieu or a professional photographer takes the selection that is shared after the experience. This is intentional — the practice requires that you not be documenting what is happening. What you live through is not content.
Financial
Why this price?
Private charter of a sailing boat, state-certified professional skipper, dedicated team (skipper, assistant, Mathieu), individual support across 35 hours non-stop, 15 days of preparation, follow-up, meals, integration. The positioning — from €2,500 for collective, €8,500 for intimate, on quote for bespoke — reflects the rarity of the format and the depth of the support.
Are payment plans available?
30% deposit at booking (to secure the spot after the interview is approved), balance at D-15. Additional instalments possible on request during the interview.
Cancellation?
More than 30 days before boarding: full refund minus administrative fees (€50). Between 30 and 15 days: 50% refunded. Less than 15 days: non-refundable, but transfer possible to a later session within the year. Documented force majeure (bereavement, hospitalisation): case-by-case review, commercial flexibility is the norm.
Is it deductible or invoiceable through a company?
A professional invoice can be issued. Deductibility depends on your status and on how your accountant qualifies the experience. It is neither a certified training nor a classic corporate seminar. Most participants pay personally.
The process
How does the application work?
1. You fill in the application form. 2. Mathieu gets back to you within 5-7 working days. 3. A 30 to 60-minute video interview with Mathieu. 4. Mutual decision at the end. 5. If admitted: 30% deposit to secure the spot, balance at D-15. 6. 7-day preparation, boarding on the planned date.
Can Mathieu turn me down?
Yes. It is even expected — around 50 to 70% of applications that reach the interview stage are declined. Misaligned profiles, medical contraindications, unsuitable expectations: refusal possible. This refusal is not a failure — it is a mutual safeguard. You will know precisely why.
How long until the next session?
Full calendar on the Apply page. On average, 6 to 10 weeks between first contact and boarding. Season: 12 sessions from May to November. Next season: spring 2027.
What if I miss this season?
The next season (2027) will open applications in autumn 2026. You can ask to be notified first through the application form — tick the « 2027 priority list » box.
A question missing?
Ask it in the application form or by email. Mathieu reads every application personally.
If you have no more questions, it is probably time to apply.
